Conservatives on Probation
Vaughan residents demand action and accountability
OTTAWA – The Honourable Maurizio Bevilacqua Member of Parliament for Vaughan and newly appointed Citizenship and Immigration critic stated today that his party is putting the Conservative government on probation. “We are prepared to support this budget with reluctance, on the condition that Canadians get the accountability from this government that they deserve,” stated Maurizio Bevilacqua.
“The residents of Vaughan and thousands of Canadians who have lost their jobs over the past few months deserve action,” stated Bevilacqua. “Our party is demanding that the Conservative government provide Canadians with comprehensive progress reports on the economy beginning on March 26, 2009,” Bevilacqua explained. “It is our responsibility to ensure that the job of the government gets done and that Canadians are well-served,” he added.
“As an opposition party we were very effective in attaining concessions in important areas such as investments in infrastructure, support for low and middle-income Canadians as well as making credit available to businesses,” explained Bevilacqua. “However, the reckless spending by the Conservatives, their failure to act and their overall mismanagement of the economic crisis before us has residents of Vaughan questioning the competence of this government that has returned Canada to an era of deficits,” stated Bevilacqua.
“Our amendment to the budget will mean transparency and accountability for Canadians,” stated Bevilacqua. “Canadians will get regular reports to Parliament on the budget’s implementation and its cost – one in March, one in June and one in December,” he explained.
“If the Prime Minister is unwilling to provide this accountability or if he fails to satisfy the expectations of Canadians, we will be ready to defeat him,” concluded Bevilacqua.
