Conservatives cancel successful program
Bevilacqua applauds Millennium Scholarship recipients
Over $1.7 million to Vaughan students in 2008

VAUGHAN – Vaughan MP Maurizio Bevilacqua is pleased to announce that the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation has awarded $1,780,422 in scholarships and bursaries to Vaughan students in 2008.

“I have spoken with thousands upon thousands of Vaughan students over the years. I know what a bright and talented group of individuals they are,” said Bevilacqua.  “I am very proud to have played a role in the creation of the program. It has made a significant contribution to their education.”

The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation was introduced ten years ago by the Liberal government to provide Canadian students with opportunities to pursue the post-secondary education they need.  In February 2008 the Conservative government decided not to renew the program.

“Of course I am disappointed that a successful program was not renewed by the Conservatives,” said Bevilacqua, a long time promoter and supporter of the CMSF.  “Since 1999, Vaughan students have benefitted greatly from the awards and scholarships distributed by the foundation.  In Vaughan, 2,155 bursaries and scholarships have been awarded to students who have been recognized for their hard work and dedication to academics and community service.”
